Steele Creek, NC
General Overview: 
Steele Creek was originally settled in the late 1600’s. Today the Steele Creek Community is located in southwest Mecklenburg County and generally includes the area south of Charlotte-Douglas Airport and west of Sugar Creek and I-77. About 47 square miles large, the rapidly growing population has over 31,000 residents. Over half of the area is within the Charlotte city limits. The region was primarily rural farm land until the 2000’s when significant infrastructure improvements greatly accelerated its development.
Special Features:
The Steele Creek Branch Library offers children’s programming, Internet access and a collection of over 41,000 books and materials. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in nearby Gaston County offers 110 acres of beautiful rolling meadows, woodlands, and themed gardens.
Schools:
Public Schools are provided by the very fine Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Higher Educational opportunities are abundant in the city of Charlotte.
Employment and Business:
South Park is home to the Fortune 500 Company Nucor, as well as National Gypsum, Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Consolidated, Piedmont Natural Gas and J.A. Jones Construction Company. Maersk, Bank of America Mortgage, First Citizens Bank, and CSX all have major divisional operations located in South Park.
Housing Options:
Housing options include single family homes, townhouses, condominiums, and large estates. There are also land lots for custom building. Several new housing developments are becoming available.

Recreation:
Recreational opportunities include the McDowell Park Nature Preserve, Copperhead Island, Steele Creek Neighborhood Park, and Thomas McAllister Winget Park. Deer hunting is available. Fishing, boating and other water sports are on nearby Lake Wylie. The Steele Creek Athletic Association offers several youth sports programs including baseball, soccer, basketball, girls’ softball and football. Also nearby on Tyvola Road is the Renaissance Park with its golf course and tennis center. The new Steele Creek Family Branch YMCA is located in the Ayrsley community. |
